IN MEMORY

David Butler

David Butler

David Charles Butler, of Keswick, Va., died on November 13, 2022. He lived his entire life in Albemarle county. Graduating from the University of Virginia in '71 as an Echols Scholar, he went on at UVA to get his Masters in '74 in Computer Science.

As an avid bowler, one of his first jobs was in the bowling industry. Accounting, Mortgage Broking, and a position as Director of Portfolio Operations for Park Miller, a registered investment advisor, rounded out his professional endeavors. Other activities included a role as a high-level, local Election Official. He was an avid fan and supporter of UVA football and basketball. An avocation of his was professional bridge engagements.

In his college years, Dave learned the great game of bridge, and went on over the next 50 years to become a top expert, winning over 100 Regional events, and placing very high in several National tournaments, attaining the rank of Platinum Life Master. Perhaps some of his bridge success came from the "poker face" acquired from his monthly poker games with friends.

Not only was he a great bridge player, but also he gave back significantly to the game in his positions as Unit President, Representative to the District Board, and as an active and successful tournament planner. He could be seen setting up and taking down bridge tables, announcing winners as he handed out prizes, patiently answering bridge players' questions and rectifying the accounts of the various tournaments he helped run. Knowing that the bridge-playing community needed to lower the average age of its members, Dave gave generously to the USBF Junior fund.

Full of integrity, Dave was a quiet, respectful, country gentleman. He will be missed by many.

A celebration of Dave's life will happen in the Spring.
